Warning to Dutch Citizens

On Monday 17 July 2017 the Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, emphasised the message being given publicity through a newly launched information campaign which has been specifically aimed at advising Dutch citizens that they could be required to renounce their Dutch citizenship should they acquire British citizenship.

Dutch Law only allows for Dual Nationality in Limited Circumstances

The current Dutch nationality and citizenship law is quite clear on the subject as the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service website explains.

Loss and the revoking of Dutch nationality

You have the Dutch nationality. You wish to know in which cases you can lose the Dutch nationality?

Automatic loss

Are you an adult? You automatically lose the Dutch nationality in the following cases (by law):

  • You voluntarily take another nationality.

This does not apply if:

    • you were born in the country of the other nationality. And if you lived there when you got this other nationality.
    • before you became an adult, you lived for at least 5 consecutive years in the country of the other nationality.
    • you are married to someone who has the other nationality.

This means that if a Dutch citizen, who does not fall into the three exempt categories, was to take British citizenship in order to settle their status in the UK post Brexit they would lose their rights to still be Dutch.

Despite receiving a petition, signed by 22,000 people, calling for a reversal of this position Mr Rutte said the government remained resolute.

“Countering dual nationality remains one of this cabinet’s policies,” the Prime Minister said.

Possible cause for concern

The loss of the Dutch citizenship would also strip the person in question of EU citizenship and accompanying rights following the UK’s exit from the EU. This must give anyone concerned contemplating this step some real questions to think about.

It may be one example of why less than two hours after the UK’s proposal on EU citizens’ rights was published in detail on 26th June 2017, Michel Barnier tweeted:

“EU goal on #citizensrights: same level of protection as in EU law. More ambition, clarity and guarantees needed than in today’s UK position.”

Maybe also, why some people do not think the UK’s proposal is a “fair and serious offer” as claimed by the government.

Recipe for the occasion, Andijviestamppot - AKA Dutch Mashed Potato with Curly Endive/Frisée

Whilst considering the implications and options this poses anyone may enjoy some traditional Dutch food. Stammpot consists of mashed potatoes mixed with one or more vegetables. It is known as the ultimate Dutch comfort food.

(By the way curly endive and frisée are the same thing, the latter being its French name.)

1.5 Kg (2 lbs)                       Floury potatoes

300 g (11 oz)                       Curly endive (Frisée)

300 g (11 oz)                       Smoked bacon (optional)

300 ml (1/2 pt)                   Milk

1 tbsp                                    Butter

Salt and pepper to taste

Pinch of nutmeg (optional but tasty)

1. Boil the Potatoes

Peel and wash the potatoes then cut into even sized pieces so they all cook at the same time. Put in a large pan, cover with salted water, bring to the boil lower the heat to a medium and cook for 20 minutes. You should be able to easily pierce them with a fork.

2. Prepare the Endive/Frisée

Wash thoroughly under cold running water, making sure you wash off all the soil that may be trapped. Trim any course stems and take off anything that doesn’t look really fresh. Drain and dry well then trim the whole into thin strips.

3. Prepare the bacon

Fry or grill the bacon until crispy, drain on kitchen towel and crumble into small pieces

4. Warm the milk and butter

5. Mash the potatoes to a nice puree

Thoroughly drain the cooked potatoes. Mash thoroughly with a masher, fork or in a blender. Add in the buttery milk until it is firm but soft. Season with slat pepper and nutmeg.

6. Add in Endive/Frisée and bacon

Mix in the raw Endive/Frisée and mix thoroughly, add the bacon pieces if using.

This wonderful dish can be served as a main meal or a side.

You can adjust this recipe at will by changing the vegetables as you like. Other favourites are rocket, fresh spinach, onions with carrots and sauerkraut. You can add small chunks of Gouda if you like or simply use those to replace the bacon.
