The Baileys Irish Cream story originates in Dublin in the mid-1970s with a visionary insight by one man, David Dand. He had the idea of creating an unashamedly luxurious alcoholic drink to savour by blending two of Ireland’s most popular products; the finest of Irish whiskey with top quality, rich Irish Cream.
Blending these two bedfellows was not at all straightforward but the Baileys’ team experimented and persisted. They had the stroke of genius of adding vanilla pods and cocoa beans to create what some may describe as nectar or liquid gold.
It is described on Baileys website as, “It’s the very best of Ireland in one bottle”.
Every single drop of Baileys cream is supplied by small, local, Irish family farms. They need over 220 million litres of fresh cream specifically for the creation of Baileys. Baileys boasts that all its cows, “known as Baileys Ladies spend 300 days a year grazing outside in luscious green fields of Ireland, enjoying fresh Irish air and listening to playlists of their favourite music.”
The Brexit conundrum is posed by the fact that some of the Baileys Ladies are from Northern Ireland.
For Republic of Ireland cows there is no pressing Brexit issue but milk from cows from Northern Ireland presently has to cross and re-cross the border for up to eight times before it ends up in a bottle of Baileys.
